Take a Stand Against Child Abuse (TX)
29 March 2008
Blue Ribbon Breakfast March 29th in Sugar Land Town Square
Child Advocates of Fort Bend (TX) will hold a Blue Ribbon Breakfast Saturday, March 29 in Sugar Land Town Square Plaza to call attention to the plight of hundreds of abused and neglected children in Fort Bend County. The event, which is free and open to the public is an opportunity for area residents to take a stand against child abuse and show support for the small victims in our community.
A short ceremony will feature inspirational music and testimonials from abuse victims and the volunteers who work with them. Partnering with Child Advocates of Fort Bend is the Exchange Club of Sugar Land which places blue ribbons on trees in First Colony and other Sugar Land neighborhoods to remind the community of the problem of child abuse.
Also featured at the event is a blue ribbon quilt made by CAFB volunteers, supporters and members of the community. The blue ribbon is a symbol of child abuse prevention. It was initiated in 1989 after a Virginia grandmother received news that her grandson had died of injuries inflicted by his parents. In an expression of her grief and outrage, she tied a blue ribbon to the antenna of her van to remember the “bruised and battered body of her grandson.”
Although child abuse knows no season, April is designated as Child Abuse Prevention Month, and Child Advocates of Fort Bend (CAFB) has a full month of activities planned to recognize small victims. Some of the ways to participate in Child Abuse Prevention Month include attending the breakfast, wearing a blue ribbon, helping to pass out blue ribbons, creating a square to add to the blue ribbon quilt, posting child abuse prevention materials in your office or place of business and inviting CAFB to talk to your group about child abuse.
CAFB provides a voice for abused and neglected children, and believes that every child deserves a safe and permanent home. With its army of volunteers, CAFB currently serves 400 children each month, and has served more than 8,000 since opening its doors in 1991. The organization relies on community support for funding and volunteers. For more information on this event, how you can become a voice for children and get involved with CAFB or April Child Abuse Prevention Month, call 281-344-5171 or log onto www.cafb.org. The next volunteer training class begins on April 19st with volunteer applications due no later than April 4th.
