Fort Lauderdale – (AP) — About 200 children were fatally abused in Florida in 2008, a roughly 20 percent increase from 2007. Unemployment rates and drug use also increased in the state — a factor in many of the deaths, according to a preliminary report.

N.J. study of child abuse says welfare workers overlook family problem – NJ.com

TRENTON — Child welfare workers too often overlooked family problems caused by mental illness, domestic violence, and drug and alcohol addiction before children died from abuse and neglect in 2007, according to a report issued today by the New Jersey Child Fatality and Near Fatality Review Board.

This annual report from the Children’s Bureau includes the data for 2007 on the estimated 3.2 million referrals made to child protective service agencies about alleged maltreatment of approximately 5.8 million children—and the estimated 794,000 children that were confirmed to be victims of abuse or neglect.
